Sunday 26th February
This Sunday sees the return to action of the J1's in the next round of the Munster Junior Challenge Cup against Mallow RFC. Mallow convincingly defeated UCC on Sunday last so even though playing Division 2 they are top of their League and can be considered a significant threat. KO is for 2.30pm and support would be welcome and appreciated.
Sunday 12th February
Not the most memorable day of Rugby from a Club point of view with both adult teams losing - the J1 to Clonmel 6 - 30 and the J2 to Carrigaline 7 - 13.
This coming Sunday sees the start of our mission in the Munster Junior Cup of 2012. Always regarded as one of the premier competitions at Junior Level, controversially there is still enough flexibility in the system to allow AIL Clubs the 'right' to play 'qualifying' senior players in this Cup - so it is always going to be a difficult competition for a genuine Junior Club to win. That said we have had some very good runs in this Cup in the past and we clearly have the personnel and the talent to go far - with the help of that little bit of luck. So the first round is against Thurlas on Sunday and the usual KO time of 2.30pm. Support would be welcome and appreciated. Update: Thurlas failed to travel - match conceded.
Sunday 22th January
Our hearts go out to the Skibbereen J1 team at the disappointment of their defeat on Sunday last against Kanturk – the match was theirs for the taking but once again it managed to slip through their fingers. Olan Allen wrote in his report of the Galbally match two weeks ago that Skibbereen “will rue the penalty chances lost that day” and he was right of course. On Sunday last we repeated the mistake eventually losing out by just 2 points 7 - 9. I daresay Olan might repeat the same observations on this occasion – so near yet so far away.
Skibbereen travelled the long journey to North Cork to contest for the second-place spot at the top of the J1 League Table, unquestionably needing the win if only to help restore some level of confidence after a few unfortunate losses against table toppers Richmond and subsequently Galbally – games we know we should have won. Travelling without the services of player/coach Declan Coppinger and centre David O’Keeffe and full-back Denis McCarthy – all out through injury – it was always going to be a big ask but in the opening quarter Skibbereen quickly realised they had no reason to fear Kanturk and began to slowly dominate and dictate terms and indeed rightly so. Many would agree they were deserving of a better return for their input in the opening forty minutes but they were still happy enough to reach the half-way stage leading 7 – 0 after a fine Pete Stoutt try and David Shannon conversion - quietly confident, and again rightly so. They started the second half well and continued the dominance into the opening 10 minutes but having then missed their third relatively easy penalty the rot set in and their game faltered and they basically allowed Kanturk back into the game, compounding matters by conceding too many penalties as the game progressed. And yet, even after some staunch and exhaustive defending and with the clock moving into the last ten minutes, Skibbereen continued to hold a slim one point lead 7 – 6. At this stage the Skibbereen supporters had come to realise that it was now a question of whether they could hold out for the whistle and scrape the much needed win - or could disaster strike yet again. And of course disaster did strike as the clock ticked away and they conceded a late but dubious penalty in a very kickable position which Kanturk took full advantage of. Skibbereen did win a late penalty too but the ref checked his watch and ruled a kick at goal the only option and it was left to David Shannon to try his luck – but it was always a bridge too far – even for an O’Gara. And so another disappointing result where yet again Skibbereen were the dominant force and truly deserving of victory - but to close out games in such circumstances requires skills we haven’t yet mastered ,it seems.

Monday 16th January
Even the poor weather didn't dampen the spirits of Skibbereen yesterday as they romped home against Kilfeacle on a scoreline of 11 - 3. On a surface that was difficult to get a grip on and a ball that was even more difficult. Skibbereen held out against stern opposition to secure the 4 points. Kilfeacle were themselves fighting a relegation battle and fought extremely hard in the second half to try and secure some little success - even a bonus point would help - but Skibbereen held the nerve and perhaps should even have put a few more scores on the board. However they will be happy with the win. Next Sunday Skibbereen are away to Kanturk - a team sharing joint second place - and Skibbereen will have to be on their very best form to take points from this North Cork encounter.
Interestingly, but not confirmed , word has filtered back that some Galbally's team sheets have thrown up a few anomalies, and if recent activity on that front is anything to go by it may yet see a few changes at the top of the League - we wait developments. As to official confirmation of the "re-claiming" of points given to Richmond - the following was received recently :-
Dear -------,
Thank you for your letter regarding Clonmel.
It was clarified at last weeks Junior committee meeting that Richmond RFC were not awarded the 3 points as shown on the League Tables.
A misunderstanding on behalf of the competitions Manager as to what sanction was applied led to the points been shown on the Web site.
The Competitions Manager has been instructed to readjust the League Tables accordingly.
I hope this clarifies the matter.
Regards,
Paul Griffin
Hon. Secretary
Junior Committee

Prior to the game on Sunday there was a pre-match lunch for invited guests to honour the O'Neill Cup winning Team of 40 years ago. The Club President John Field was a member of that team and all his fellow team-mates and guests were invited along to join in the celebrations. A great day was had by all and the celebrations went on long into the night. Four special presentations were also made to founder members John Wolfe; Paddy Hurley, Glandore; John Hosford; and Myles O'Brien with John Wolfe responding appropriately for the recipients, Presentation of a Club Tie and Photograph of the winning team were presented to the O'Neill Cup winning Team of the 1970/71 season.

Sunday 8th January 2012
This was the second trip to Limerick for our J1 team in a month – the first against Richmond on the 11th December ended in a 4 point defeat – and then last Sunday 8th January against Galbally and sadly another defeat this time by 5 points. All present would agree that both were very winnable match’s on the day but on each occasion there were problems converting acknowledged match dominance into points on the board. As usual on Sunday last, like any other day, the lads played their hearts out over the 80 minutes and were feeling quietly confident facing into the second half with just the 5 points down and having a good wind advantage also. However the scores did not come despite good attacking sequences as well as disappointment in not converting penalty opportunities. The final score was 8 – 3. This latest defeat effectively dashes hopes of a league success this year – short of a few miraculous results - but there are a few Cups coming up shortly so there is still plenty to fight for. Next Sunday we entertain Kilfeacle at home – which will hopefully see us back into winning ways.

Sunday 11th December
Crunch time in Limerick it certainly was - and Richmond came away with the points after what was a hectic battle, not alone from Richmond but the elements also - it was cold wet and windy with even a few hailshowers thrown in. Our lads battled well but in the end could not close the gap of 9-13 even though there were plenty of opportunities - right up to the 80th minute - but it was not to be. We were the better team on the day but we made a few mistakes also - at critical times - and we left it after us. Richmond were thrilled to have held out for the win - and they knew it.
Clonakilty J2's failed to show at the home venue and so Skibbereeen J2's go fprward to the next stage.
Sunday 4th December
Our J1's recorded their best result so far in the League with a comprehensive win 42 - 0 over Clanwilliam on Sunday last, and in doing so also gained a valuable bonus point. Sadly our J2's were not as successful and they will be kicking themselves having lost out to Carrigaline in extra time. Leading by a single point on full time and happy to hold out for the whistle, we gave away a penalty in extra time and Carrigaline didn't miss the opportunity and ran out winners 15 - 13. However the can be back in the driving seat this weekend if they can secure a home win against Clonakilty.

Membership Subscriptions 2011/2012
Its come to that time of year again when subscriptions are due so hopefully all concerned will be kind enough to pay their ‘dues’ as quickly as possible. There is no mystery as to what one has to pay as the categories are pretty straight forward. (See under Membership) However an important addition to the categories is the Family Membership and will be helpful to families who may have a few kids interested in playing and of course Mum and Dad will automatically be full members also and have the same entitlements as every other member. I’m thinking here of the mad scramble every year for Heineken Cup, Autumn Internationals as well as Six Nation Rugby tickets which can be as rare as ‘hen’s teeth’ and are only available to fully paid up members – so there are advantages of membership.
